What started out to be just a file renaming job became an adding content job. I don’t know why I don’t stop myself during times like this.

Heads-Up: Over the next week or so, I will be changing the printable file folder names. I do this every year. Should you click on a FILE link that doesn’t seem to work, refresh the web page. Refreshing is done by clicking the curved arrow at the top of most browsers, or by pressing F5 on your keyboard.

Okay

I didn’t really mean to add the nature journal pictures today, but I did. It’s on my list for this month, but not for today. It is several pages long, look for the menu on the right side. You can see the beginning here:

http://donnayoung.org/homeschooling/science/nature-journal.htm

After adding it I realized that the nature journal links to printable 1/2 sized files that are only on my site-cd, YoungMinds.

What good is that? I ask you.

None, you say.

And I agree.

I spent the next 4 hours converting some of the files from the site cd for donnayoung.org. Those files can be used to construct parts of a 1/2 sized

http://donnayoung.org/science/natj/half-nature-journal.htm

These pages are not the limit of 1/2 sized nature study recording, no, they are just the tip of the iceberg. A journal should also have ordinary unadorned paper in it, as well as various ruled papers, some with blank tops, some with even blanker tops if you can imagine what that is. The journal is basically a vessel where your child writes, draws, copies, and studies what is observed in nature. The Nature Journal images that I added today reflect on that idea.

Calendars

A couple of days ago, I added new calendars. Someone requested this type or at least, this type is what I think was requested. It is a one-page-monthly block calendar. I included the doc format along with the typical pdf.

http://donnayoung.org/calendars/vertical-monthly-calendar.htm

Thanks for visiting my web site.

Early this morning, I added a new article to donnayoung.org. I know that yesterday I said I wanted to write about art, English, and science, but I have to write about high school. The article is about my daughter’s 11th grade English class notebook. She used the notebook daily; it was an essential part of her class.

Prior to writing the article, because I did not wake up thinking that I would write it, I was reading, Do You Need a Planner. Above the description of how my homeschool planner-book style changed over the years, I saw the mention of subject notebooks and that is how I came to write the article, High School Subject Notebook.

The article is rather short like all of my articles and you can read it here: http://donnayoung.org/forms/help/high-school-subject-notebook.htm.

After writing the article and forcing myself not to write too much or go off the topic, I want to say more about the syllabus. I added a syllabus file along with the Garamond collection a few months ago. I call the file Class Planner. Homeschoolers who plan to continue through high school should learn about the parts of a class planner, in the style of a syllabus. I am sure some other topic will distract me tomorrow, but I plan to write about the syllabus eventually, before March. I should schedule that in my web site planner.

Donnayoung.org was out this morning and some yesterday. It’s my fault, I let the domain name expire and it wasn’t there to be found. I fixed it, donnayoung.org is now registered for 10 years.

Two years ago when I transferred the domain name to the current holder, I thought that December 27th was a bad day to register anything as important as a website name. December 27th is a busy time; it’s right after Christmas and I am occupied by things other than renewing a domain name.

So now donnayoung.org is registered for 10 years. The next time it expires, it will be 2 days after Christmas ‘18 and I will be 10 years older. I wonder if I will remember? Perhaps someone should send me a letter December 2018. Perhaps I should set up an email reminder to myself.

I apologize that donnayoung.org was down.

Speaking of donnayoung.org, I am ready to get back to working on new content for the website. I’m ready to write about homeschooling.

If you visit donnayoung.org regularly, then most of this will not be new to you. The newest files were added today, October 25th. Skip down to the bottom to see what was added or go to the DY home page. The newest will be listed there.
Thanks,
DY
http://donnayoung.org

=== GeoSafari Resources ===

If you have a tabletop geosafari unit, please visit the resources that I have added to the geosafari resources web site. I added instructions for the 3-ring binder template and images of that and other template styles.
http://donnayoung.org/homeschooling/games/geocards.htm

=== 2-Page Attendance Forms ===

The 2-page attendance form can keep attendance records for one student. Each page is for one semester. Keep attendance totals for each week, each month, and each semester.
http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/attendance.htm

=== 2009 Half-Sized Dated Block Planner ===

The dated 2009 Half-Sized Block Planner refills are ready and uploaded. These files are designed to be printed on a regular sized printer paper, then cut in half. For notebooks that use 5.5” x 8.5” filler.
http://donnayoung.org/household/halfsize/dated_block/2009.htm

=== Grades & Attendance ===

Someone wrote me recently about a Grades and Attendance file alteration and that brought me to the G&A files. I altered a weighted points G&A file to have 12 subjects and that file is uploaded to the Grades and Attendance. Scroll down the page and look for the one labeled 12 subjects.
http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/go08/xl/g_a_excel/points.htm

=== Grades & Attendance Compare Page ===

Because I like charts, I added a web page that compares the 3 basic G&A’s that are online at DY.
http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/go08/xl/g_a_excel/compare.htm

=== Half-Sized Ruled Planner ===

Because I am tired of the old ruled planner, I have replace the old one with a new ruled planner online. This one is dated and ready to print, and there is no need to write in the month and year.
http://donnayoung.org/household/halfsize/ruled/index.htm

=== Household Dated Files ===

Updated to include the years 2009, 2010, and in some cases, 2011.
http://donnayoung.org/household/index.htm

=== Site-CD aka YoungMinds ===

2009 Version is completed
http://donnayoung.org/cd/index.htm

=== Saxon Math Grade Records DOC files ===

A homeschool mom recently requested a doc format of the Saxon math grade record files. I understand that the files do not go exactly with the new Saxon Books. The two DOC files are uploaded and linked. You may alter the files to suit the math book that you have.
http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/grade.htm#saxon-grade

=== High School Course of Study ===

After months and months of an empty page, there is something to read now!
http://donnayoung.org/forms/help/high-school-course.htm

=== High School Forms ===

New forms - matches Garamond (below)
Course Checklist
http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/hsplan.htm

=== Garamond Collection ===

Garamond collection is a new group of planners that are spread out over two web pages, the one linked below and the high school forms web page. The font, Garamond, is used in the set. The set includes standard lesson planners and a few that are a little different. Garamond also includes a class planner.
http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/garamond.htm

This one is dated and ready to print, no need to write the month and year.

The announcement above is currently on the front page of DY [donnayoung.org] so you may have already seen it. I really am tired of the old ruled planner. Not tired of having it, I am just tired of linking it. Besides, I had a new design that I made three years ago that I never used on any of my websites.

The Half-Sized Calendars are updated up to the year 2011 and as before, they are available in the months of January, June, July, and August.

The new 2009 Block Planner has been posted for about 6 weeks now.

The Full-Sized calendars are next on the list.

Variety is nice and variety is even nicer when one can compare similar items in a table. On this web page: http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/go08/xl/g_a_excel/compare.htm is a table with the three basic G&A types that are at donnayoung.org. I am not sure that such a table was necessary because the differences between the G&A’s are not all that great.

The major differences are:

How the grades are entered: If you prefer to write 100 or 100%

If you will weigh final grades or not: Choose unweighted or weighted, or choose weighted and disable the weight on some subjects.

Grades and Attendance - Points & Weighted Version with 12 Subjects

It is the only one that can hold 12 subjects and it can be downloaded from this webpage: http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/go08/xl/g_a_excel/points.htm

A couple of days ago I redid the pages that have geosafari resources. I spread the resources over several pages and I added some images and a few more codes. Additionally, I changed the location of the geosafari pages, but I did leave behind a link at the old address.

Here is the new location and starting page — > GeoSafari Resources

I might work more on the geosafari area or I might not, I just never seem to have enough time to do what I would like to do with my website. While I am writing this and have your attention, I will add something to this blog post that might never make it in my website.

Allow Your Children to Make a GeoSafari Card

It’s not outlandish, your child might even ask to make a card if they realize that cards can be made. My daughter made a couple of cards when she was around 6-7 years old. This was during the time that I was still formulating how best to make cards and because my little girl had to find me to hug me every 30 minutes when she was that age, she saw the things that I was doing. She asked to make a card. Pictured below is her first attempt. I helped her when she needed help. If you would like to see a larger image, click on the small one.

Holly’s card, Babby Pet, is a Matching Answers type card. She made a card about the things that she loves. Children can learn a variety of different skills while pursing their interests. Us homeschoolers ALL know, or will eventually know, that is one of the GREAT freedoms that homeschooling allows children.

Attendance Forms

Yesterday I made a new attendance form and added it to my website. It’s a nice, plain 2-page form. I have it in PDF format and you can print one that starts in either the month of July or August.

By the way, this is a dated attendance form and having dates on a form like this is always nice.

The Attendance Form is Here: — > Attendance Form

On the Home Front

John is officially going to the university in the nearby city. Last week he went to the 2-day orientation, chose classes, and received his schedule. We are all a bit excited about it!

I am not finished with anything, (I just had to add that). My garden is producing more food than we can eat and that is a good thing, but it keeps me busy. I am also not finished with the quilt that I was working on. I spread it over the table again last weekend and continued pinning it. I bought 300 more pins, but that was not enough. When I took a picture of Holly’s card, I pulled back and took a picture of a corner of the quilt. Click on the small image if you want to see a bigger version. I’m still not sure when I will be able to fit this quilt in - perhaps when the garden is finished.

That’s all for now, I have to go and pick vegetables and do something with them.

Have a nice day!

Several people emailed me to ask about the second edition and the general science schedules.

This update is to announce that I have made a schedule for this new book that is based on the newest first edition schedule. I also updated the general science pages at donnayoung.org. All of that is finished, I hope, and you can find the schedule at

http://donnayoung.org/apologia/pages/general-schedule2.htm

The schedule is more of a planner for the modules. The topics of the book are listed vertically as a checklist. The topics are grouped to indicate days. Each page is devoted to one module. I will add a large image of page 11.

One comment: The 3rd column is free and you can use it for nothing or anything, possibly grades.
