I am starting work on the V Planner V3 file today and if there is anything that you would like to see included, now is the time to request it. V3 will be based on the High School V Planner with some parts removed and some V2.5 parts added back. If you have looked at High School V Planner, then you can see where I am going with V3.

I will list some of the new things below with a little information about each item-

– 10 S-Sheets

Four of the S-Sheets will be split by semester. This gives the option of having different classes per semester on a single s-sheet. Using a split S-Sheet is not difficult; it is the set-up for the s-sheet that is a little different.

– 4 School Calendars – one per child

This means setting up the school calendar will take a little longer, but the advantages are that
Each child can have

unique school calendar dates

unique grading term dates

unique school starting date

a different number of grading terms – up to six per year or up to three per semester on a split s-sheet

– Class Categories – (an optional item)

I am planning to keep the course categories because those allow the course description worksheet to function. It is an optional item and not using it will not break anything.

– Two Outside Classes (tab name Other Courses)

I will keep this worksheet because it seems that many use a co-op for at least one class. “Other Courses” will allow you to record a few details about the co-op class – not a schedule, but details that would go on a report card – class names and grades . Using this worksheet is optional and not using it will not break anything.

– NS/DS Planners

For the high school planner I made the lesson planners so that with a drop-down list selection a planner could be used for either system. This means that you can view a planner as a Number System planner and then view the same planner as a Date System planner by changing the system selection and selecting a date. I will keep this for V3.
Thank you for reading and if you want to comment on any of these items or make a suggestion, please do so.

Sincerely,

Pictured here is one S-Sheet (subject sheet) from the Up coming High School V Planner. V Planner 3 will have a similar S-Sheet. The two most important changes to the S-Sheets are:

3 Columns for Plans

Management controls (Date system and Number system) that send lesson plans to planners are all moved to the left side of the page

Those who are familiar with the V Planner might wonder how the 2nd and 3rd plan columns will show on the planners.

Each planner will have a control for each subject that will allow you to show or hide any one of the columns.

The screenshot above shows the row of lesson plans for Algebra and to the right, the controls that show or hide the columns.
The screenshot below shows column 2 is hidden. At the control, h2 is selected. H2 refers to Hide Column 2. The effect is shown in the first planner cell which is the only cell that had content in column 2.

Edited to add final notes on the 3 columns -

Columns 2 and 3 are “attached” to column 1. That means columns 2 and 3 may not be shifted with either system to appear on a different day.

Columns 2 or 3 may be used for teacher’s notes, and if a certain column is used for teacher’s notes, be consistent and always use the same column. This precaution is avoid confusion when setting up a planner that will be used for only teacher’s notes.

(February) I’m still working on both V Planner 3 and High School V Planner. I hope to have them finished in a few weeks or, at the latest, sometime in June.

V Planner 44 Beta Version

A screenshot of one of the planners in the file.

This is to announce a new V Planner. It is different from the other ones in several ways.

1. It supports shared classes. These types of classes are sometimes referred to as “together classes”
2. It uses keys to distinguish items in the planners
3. The grade book is not included on the s-sheets, instead, the grade book is separate. The separation was necessary to support “together classes”
4. 11 S-Sheets allows for 44 subjects
5. Grade book allows for 88 subjects
6. Book lists are included on planners as “keys” on the student planners
7. On the teacher’s block planners, the books are listed with full titles

The planner is currently considered Beta, and not final. It is also filled with sample data. I am releasing the file to you now so that you may look at the file and try it out to see if it is one that you would like to use. The sample data is currently set up with a 3-child scenario using 25 subjects, 11 of which are shared, and 1 is used to schedule a dance class, and using 43 grading areas in the grader. Another reason for the sample data is that I have not written help pages and seeing how to use the V Planner 44 should be easier with sample data. I hope to get help pages and some videos made in the next few months. Meanwhile I have to work on the other two V Planners – V Planner 3 and High School V Planner.

The file may be accessed on the V Planner page that is online in the membership area. The member link is at
http://donnayoung.org/dymem/member/index

Go to the “V Planner Access” link that is listed under “Active Resources.”

I will let you know when V Planner 44 is no longer Beta. Feel free to contact me regarding the planner with the form on the V Planner page.

Thank you for reading.

Sincerely,

This is a repeat of the Yahoo group update that I just sent out.

It seems that I have been very busy. Below are 28 official updates to various sections of donnayoung.org.

–Art > Crafts

A friend wanted to make photo cubes for a gift and so I made a set of templates using Microsoft Word that one may use to create photo cubes that would be (what I hoped would be) a little easier than doing the entire project in photo editing software. The cube templates and instructions uses four pages and they are listed below.

Cube Templates and The Memory Cube

http://donnayoung.org/art/cube-template.htm

A memory cube is a project in which one places 6 photographs on a cube. The cube can be made of wood, but in the case of this particular memory cube, the cube is a piece of card stock paper that has the photos printed on it and then folded into a cube shape. This page provide doc templates in 7 cube sizes.

Cube Templates and How to Work with the Pictures

http://donnayoung.org/art/cube-template-images.htm

This page details at some length how to work with the photographs after adding them to the memory cube doc file.

Cube Templates and How to Fold the Memory Cube

http://donnayoung.org/art/cube-template-folding.htm

This page tells how to fold the memory cube.

Cube Templates and Pre-Folding and Cutting the Memory Cube

http://donnayoung.org/art/cube-template-cutting.htm

This page describes how one might pre-fold the cube and how to cut the cube.

—

Because it was around Christmas time, I worked on the gift tags page.

New Gift Tags and Improved Template Docs

http://donnayoung.org/art/gift-tags.htm#blank-tags

Blank Gift Tags – I updated the doc gift tag templates to improve the layout of the table cells and added a docx. While doing that I made 3 sets of gift tags with Microsoft’s clipart using the template and put those online as pdf files.

—

I spent a lot of time working with calendars last fall and this is one of the new ones that ended up in the Art section.

Calendar Frame

http://donnayoung.org/art/calendar-frame.htm

The calendar frame is a simple calendar with months that are listed in clockwise order. The header of the calendar frame is typeable; however the header can be made blank. The center part measures slightly less than 5 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches tall. Use the center of the calendar frame as you will, examples are placing a drawing or a photograph in the center.

===end art section===

–Calendars

Blank “Undated” Dated Calendar

http://donnayoung.org/calendars/blank-dated-calendar.htm

This calendar is educational in a way. It is a monthly calendar and has no numbers, however; it is dated. Each month will have the right amount of date blocks in the proper places. The child should write the dates in the correct block, basically beginning with day 1 in the first block and writing numbers in sequence, across then down, until the blocks are filled. The child could also write the month and year, which is already noted on each month, and draw a seasonal picture on each month. Optionally, holidays could be noted. This calendar can potentially (depending on child’s age) add to skills and knowledge in language arts, math, social studies, and drawing.

Vertical Monthly Notebook Calendars

http://donnayoung.org/calendars/vertical-monthly-calendar.htm#ruled

Of course calendars continue to occupy work and I can’t seem to resist making new calendar styles. This new style is a one-page monthly calendar that has ruled lines, most of which are dated.

Printable Undated Calendars

http://donnayoung.org/calendars/blank-calendars.htm#year-long

Requested: Blank Calendar in the Blue Calendar style and the Frame Calendar style. These files are placed on the Blank Calendar page at Calendars > Blank

Printable Horizontal Monthly Calendars

http://donnayoung.org/calendars/horizontal-monthly-calendars.htm#colonial-wall-calendar

The only dated “wall” calendar that I have was expiring this year (and I just removed it from the page) and I made another wall calendar to take it’s place. It’s made in the same style as the Colonial Set.

3-Year Calendar

http://donnayoung.org/calendars/calendars.htm

3-Year Calendar – Someone requested a 3-year per page calendar a few days ago and so I made the calendars and now they are online.

===end calendar section===

–Household

I added recipes to the household section and that remains officially unannounced, but meanwhile to some of the recipes I will add printable files, two are listed below.

Spicy Popcorn Recipe and Recipe Card

http://donnayoung.org/household/recipes/spicy-popcorn.htm

The Spicy Popcorn page will be new to most of you. Today I updated the instructions to reflect exactly how I make the popcorn; I’ve been making it for years, and I added a 4×6 recipe card in the Microsoft Word formats of – DOC for Word 97-2003 and DOCX for Word 2007 and newer.

Fantasy Fudge Recipe and Recipe Cards

http://donnayoung.org/household/recipes/fantasy-fudge.htm

Fantasy Fudge from the Kraft Marshmallow label – Our family’s been making this particular fudge for decades. I picked up ingredients today to make some for someone. The recipe is online at the page linked here and I added recipe cards, a pdf of 4 small cards that could be packed with a gift of fudge and the typical 4×6 recipe card size in doc and docx formats.

—

Two articles about two different ways to plan meals; there are many ways to go about it.

13 Meals – The Repeating Meal Method of Meal Planning

http://donnayoung.org/household/articles/13-meals.htm

13 Meals – The Repeating Meal Method of Meal Planning – A method of meal planning that sorts menus not by date, but by meal names, more specifically, repeating meals. I started this method in the early 1990′s and on this page, I have described the method and provided menu planners for this method.

The Category Method of Meal Planning

http://donnayoung.org/household/articles/meal-planning.htm

The Category Method of Meal Planning – There are several ways to plan meals and ways to not plan meals. This page explains Meal Categories, which basically, is a record of meals. If you like keeping records, then this record of meals is something that you can refer to during those large parts of your life when you do not plan meals, you just make them.

—

I finally moved this large menu planner online. It had previously been only one the site-cd, YoungMinds.

Menu Planner

http://donnayoung.org/household/fullsize/menu-planner.htm

A menu planner in two colors – black and white, and blue and white. This planner allows you to keep a running record of meals and it has the typical menu planner files to go with it. Part of this menu planner is based on my category method of making meal plans.

—

A new Month on a Page in household planner

Month on a Page Household Planner

http://donnayoung.org/household/fullsize/month-on-a-page.htm

I came across a file that I had forgotten about. It is a “Month on a Page” type of calendar. This one is called List Top and I have a non-dated version of it at Calendars > Blank Calendars. Anyway, I made a whole lot of dated “List Top” calendars.

—

A new half-sized menu planner

1/2 Sized Menu Planner

http://donnayoung.org/household/halfsize/kitchen-planner.htm

I needed a small menu planner for some special menus that I must make this year. I opened up Microsoft Excel and came up with a new 1/2 sized menu planner design. Originally I made the file so that it could be printed as a month-long booklet with the pdf booklet setting, which is what I needed. Shortly after that, I made my regular sort of printable 1/2-size file layout which does not use any special printer settings. Both are online.

===end household section===

–Homeschool Planner

A new attendance file that is for more than one child; it’s about time I made. Not only does it let you keep records for several children, it is dated. This might be the best homeschool attendance planner page insert out there.

Homeschool Attendance Records – Attendance H

http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/attendance.htm#attendanceh

Attendance H – an attendance calendar that can be used for several children. I made 3 versions of this new attendance calendar – one for 2 children (1 page), one for 4 children (2 pages), and one for 7 children (3 pages). I am calling it Attendance H because it prints horizontally.

—

2-Page Attendance Calendar – an extra choice for August

http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/attendance.htm#2-page

I was recently updating the files for the 2-page dated attendance form when I realized that I needed to make one more for August – one that included January in both the 1st and 2nd semesters. Our homeschool year typically started in August and the 2nd semester started in January. Once in a while the 1st semester used part of January. So now we have a 2-page attendance calendar with two Januaries.

Dated Daily Planner Spreadsheet

http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/daily.htm#dated

Someone recently asked me if I had a daily planner. I do, but today I had an idea for a spreadsheet file with which one can enter subjects and print daily planners, blank, with subjects and dates. I included a video that shows how it works.

–Homeschool Planner > V Planner

New V Planner Videos

http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/vp-videos.htm

It has been almost two months since my last update; I’ve been busy, but, recently, to assist those who use the V Planner, I have made several new V Planner Videos. The link shown here goes to the basic V Planner video page. All of the new videos are marked.

Moving Lesson Plans into the Next Term with the Bump Column

http://donnayoung.org/forms/planners/vp-ss-terms-shifting.htm

V Planner Tip- How to move lesson plans into the next grading term with the bump column.

===end Homeschool Planner section===

–English

XLS – The Composition Grader

My old XLS grader bravely moves online – I made this grader many years ago and I used it to help me arrive at a fair grade for paragraphs, essays, lab reports.

http://donnayoung.org/english/composition/composition-grader.htm

An XLS file – The Composition Grader is a criteria based grader that is useful for obtaining a grade for written works such as lab reports, essays, etc.

Prepositional Phrases

http://donnayoung.org/english/grammar/prepositions.htm

While working on the page, Prepositional Phrases, I added files for the Thanksgiving song by Lydia Maria Child: Over the River and Through the Wood. The pdf version has a ruled right side for anything that you deem useful.

===end English section===

–Penmanship

I added a set of paper, one that uses handwriting rule.

Handwriting Rule Paper 2012 Set – Full and Blanktop

http://donnayoung.org/penmanship/handwriting-paper-bw.htm#set-2012

I made a new handwriting paper set – 2012 Set. The set includes rule sizes from 1 inch to 1/4 inch in 1/8th inch increments in both fully ruled and blank-top. The 1/4 inch rule also comes in a booklet. I added one more size – 1/4 inch Tall, a rule size that allows one to write tall uppercase letters.

The Blank-top version of this set: http://donnayoung.org/penmanship/blank-top-paper.htm#set-2012

Blank-Top Handwriting Paper

http://donnayoung.org/penmanship/blank-top-paper.htm

Two years ago a woman emailed me and asked, “Where is the black and white blank top handwriting paper with the landscape orientation?” (My web site says that I have it) I looked at where it was supposed to have been and it was not there. … And so I made a file with 7 handwriting rule sizes and emailed the file to her and then I linked the file on the blank-top handwriting paper page without any p whatsoever – it was just a link. Today, 2 years later, I wonder, did I ever describe the link, make it user-friendly? No I didn’t. And so today I fixed that. Now it is plain to see and easy to find the blank-top horizontal handwriting paper in 7 rule sizes.

===end Penmanship section===

I think that is all; Thank you for reading.

Happy Homeschooling,

Today I was asked a question about the V Planner that I kind of expected to get eventually. The question was:

We are using a literature-rich curriculum, Tapestry of Grace, that incorporates more than the 18 books that will fit into the reading list as it is.

I wonder whether you could tell me how to add spaces to the reading list.

I looked at the V Planner and saw that I would need to do this myself instead of sending instructions because the formulas that pick up the titles point to a sheet that cannot be edited by the V Planner users. Additionally, I wanted to add all of the necessary changes and links to the file myself. A new Course of Study Sheet is added and so I bumped the version up a notch to V2.51.

The Changes

New Sheet: COS72
Named so for it supports up to 72 books in the reading list.

COS72 will require 2 or more pages when printing. Print area instructions are included on sheet.

More Fields for Books at Data
The fields are added to the right in groups of 18.

Only COS72 supports all 72 book fields; COS and COS2 support up to 18 books.

Links to COS72
Links to COS72 were added on the Today sheet (pictured) and on the Data sheet.

In a nutshell- If you have more than 18 books for the reading list, use the newly added sheet COS72.

One more thing – If you are currently mid-year using the planner, then please do not feel that you should change to this version. That would be far too much work.

And finally V Planner V2.51 can be downloaded after logging in at the “Member” link that is at the top of the pages at DonnaYoung.org. If you have access to the old V Planner download page but you do not have a log in, then please contact me via the old download page using the special contact form on the page.

And by the way, Happy New Year!

This update was published to the yahoo group and is published online at: http://donnayoung.org/new/update-2012-08.htm

A new page with several math practice problem sets. Currently addition problems and a few subtraction problems. Each problem set has 10 problems and among the 8 printable files are 56 problems sets.

In Homeschool Planner > Administrative > Grades and Attendance

All Files – DY’s Grades and Attendance – This page puts all of my G&A files in a table so that you can more easily compare the features of each one.

In Homeschool Planner > High School > High School Forms (and Sets > Garamond)

I have added the form that I call “The List Planner” to the Garamond Planner in both PDF and DOC formats to the high school planner page and to the Garamond planner page, (and also the course of study page.)

In Science > Apologia > Co-op & More Biology

Lesson Plans for the two books (published by Apologia): The Human Body and Advanced Chemistry [2nd Ed.] are online. The lesson plans were made by Pam Cavitt. Thank you Pam! Plans may be downloaded from Advanced Chemistry and The
Human Body. The plans are in the formats: PDF, XLS, XLSX.

Planning Pages and TOC for The Human Body
Shortly after adding Pam’s lesson plans for The Human Body, I added planning pages and a table of contents (TOC) for The Human Body. The TOC might be useful for those using the full course CD-ROM rather than the book.
Three cursive handwriting warm-up printable files, each one has two sections. They are not meant to “go with” any particular cursive style, they are just warm-ups. The warm-ups are also linked at Cursive and Cursive Z.

In Handwriting > By Style

Italic Handwriting Practice
This page has two sets sorted by rule height- 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch. Layout: There are two lessons on each printable worksheet. Each lesson in Set One, the 1/2 inch rule height set, involves both tracing and writing using a
starting dot for each letter. Set Two, the 3/8 inch height rule set does not have a starting dot for the “write-your-own” parts of the lessons.
http://donnayoung.org/penmanship/dn-handwriting-worksheets.htm

In English > Forms

Language Arts Forms – This page brings together forms that can be used for
language arts. The two that I used the most are listed first. The first one, a planner, can be for any subject that has three divisions. I made it for my children’s high school English classes because the bulk of the plans for each day were in three parts –…
http://donnayoung.org/english/language-arts-forms.htm

Section Indexes

I’m always trying to think of ways to make it easier to find the resources at donnayoung.org. To that end, I have added a section index for some of the sections and I’ve updated the old section indexes.

Homeschool Planner Index
http://donnayoung.org/homeschool-planner-index.htm
The V Planner index is added to the right column on the Homeschool Planner Index as well as the right column on all V Planner help pages.

Art Index
http://donnayoung.org/art-index.htm

English Index
http://donnayoung.org/english-index.htm

All Calendars Index – All pages that have dated files
http://donnayoung.org/calendars-index.htm

Site CD

The Site CD, YoungMinds is 20% off during August. This particular version of my CD is a complete make-over of YoungMinds. The CD now looks similar to donnayoung.org, with the same style of menus, which should make it easier to navigate. When making this new version of the CD, I remade most of my oldest files and added many new files. The CD includes the V Planners and access to future V Planners.
http://donnayoung.org/cd/index.htm

I think that is all; Thank you for reading.

Happy Homeschooling,
